The simulation guide

A clear path to your
first practice portfolio.

Everything you need to make a trade, follow the market, and start again with a new approach.

All money and prices are fictional. This exercise illustrates investing concepts; it is not a forecast or recommendation.

Start with a blank portfolio

Your simulation begins at Month 1 with $10,000 in virtual cash. Your progress is saved in this browser. There is no FinSmart account to create.

Explore 11 fictional investments

Compare five fictional companies (Nova Technologies, Meridian Healthcare, Apex Industries, Horizon Energy, Crest Consumer Group), four FinSmart funds, the FinSmart Gold Reserve and the FinSmart Treasury Fund. Pick a bull, bear or volatile scenario before you start, and compare your results with the fictional FinSmart Market Index.

Place a practice trade

Choose Buy, select an investment, and enter a whole number of shares. Review the estimated cost before confirming. You can only spend the cash available in your portfolio. Choose Sell to sell shares you already own.

Advance the market

Select Next month to reveal a market event. Prices change, your portfolio updates, and the market brief explains the lesson. You can trade as much or as little as you like before advancing again.

Review your decisions

Follow your portfolio chart, compare your holdings, and check your activity history. Think about how much you have invested in one company or fund, and how much remains in cash.

Reset and try another approach

Use Reset simulation beside Next month at any point, or Start a new simulation after month 12. A confirmation dialog lets you keep your portfolio or restart. Reset restores $10,000, Month 1, lets you choose a new market scenario, and restores original prices, and empty holdings, trade history, and chart history. Every run follows the same market scenario so you can compare strategies.

Common questions

Are these live market prices?

No. Prices follow a fixed, fictional 12-month scenario. Real markets are less predictable.

Can I reset before the year is over?

Yes. Reset simulation is available at every month, including Month 1 and after Month 12. Select Keep my portfolio to cancel without changing your progress.

Will my progress follow me to another device?

No. Progress is saved in this browser. Clearing browser storage removes it. A different browser, device, or website domain uses separate storage.

Does the simulator include fees, taxes, or dividends?

No. This simplified version also excludes interest and short selling. You trade whole shares using only the virtual cash available.

Does it include an AI assistant?

The simulator includes written market briefs and lessons. It does not include an AI chatbot.
